Marketing Vendor Considerations

As an owner or decision maker for a business, you are likely bombarded with reps from various companies trying to sell you a multitude of products and services.  Advertising agencies may offer you “the kitchen sink” and most have some great solutions as well as the ability to help you develop an effective marketing strategy.  Of course, you will be approached by the local newspapers, radio stations, broadcast TV stations, cable companies, video production houses, and an endless number of vendors offering digital adverting services.  Choosing the right products, services, and vendors can be confusing and time consuming but is a necessary evil of your responsibility.  Your due diligence in vetting multiple vendors to decide which fits your business best is vital.  Always compare and contrast at least three candidates for each need.  Keep in mind that just because one company offers it’s all doesn’t mean they have the best solution for every need.  You can always commit to a la carte services based on you vetting process.

One of the most overlooked things to consider is the contract you are presented.  The industry standard for adverting is a 30 day out for cancellation.  Use extreme caution with any agency or vendor that does not offer a 30 day out and is trying to sign you to a long-term contract of approximately 12 months or more.  My recommendation if you decide that a vendor or agency is right for your business and doesn’t offer an out, is to sign a contract with a maximum term of three months.
